CHAIR AFFAIR 2010
This chair came into my life a few months ago. Humble, drab and unimposing, it was little more than skin and bones, almost a skeleton really.  I tried to see beyond the surface. I tried to discern it’s personality, but it was hard to tell much at that point. Thus began an interaction with an object which “resisted” all my efforts to impose my will on it. I carried on intellectual conversations with it. I photographed it and drew pictures of it.

I began to imagine myself in the role of Professor Henry Higgens in the movie “My Fair Lady” with the chair playing Eliza Doolittle. I was determined to whip it into shape. I dressed it in various costumes and tried accessories of all kinds, but nothing seemed to work. The chair just sat there in my studio like a sullen child. In time I recognized that this “child” was a “she” not an “it” and that “her” personality was emerging. Not frilly and fluffy, not ethereal and spacey, not the girl next door type, she refused them all. She was vampish and demanding and certainly not wimpy. She prefers red and black and lots of bling. She has attitude. I finally got on board and did what she wanted, and behind her back I call her "The Dominatrix".
